Usucaption: a method by which ownership of property can be obtained by having said property been owned or used for a certain amount of time.
Usucaption puts to sale all the islets surrounding Majorca in one of the main property marketplaces of Spain. This action, impossible due to the fact that they are considered natural terrains that cannot be sold, directly criticises multiple situations impacting the physical space of Majorca: the normalisation and acceptance of the unlimited commercialisation without limits, the lack of space and its impact of an island that can’t grow in any direction even though both inhabitants and tourist numbers are rising, and the depletion of resources as a consequence of massive consumption.
By putting those lands to sale, the voluntary act of being part of what is being criticised is accepted. If there’s nothing else, no new spaces can appear and the limit of what’s acceptable is lost, only the islets to be sold are left, only what still belongs to the island while not being connected to it remains. The descriptions for the pieces of land included in the listings are an additional reference to this ironic intention that allows a possible buyer to be part of the game, while avoiding all of the security measures that the platform sets for these kinds of ads is a reminder that what is happening goes beyond what is morally acceptable. But by being able to publish it, one wonders if this is, after all, a feasible option.
